We were delighted to work on the 5 Mile Street 452 bed, £42M budget, student accommodation project in South West London As well as bedrooms, this 33-storey building includes a wealth of personal and communal study areas, lounges and a large cycle store. The project also delivered significant enhancements to the public realm. Walsh engineers supported the building’s substructure overcoming a number of challenges including a very small restricted site close to a National Rail viaduct, sensitive settlement requirements and a tight construction schedule. This meant pile load testing wasn’t possible.

Despite this, our team devised a pile raft solution In collaboration with our consultants. This used high level ground to limit deflections and earned the project a place on the 2017 Ground Engineering Awards shortlist. Andy Stanford, Walsh Director commented “We have undertaken a number of similar projects with Urbanest and are experienced in finding innovative solutions and technologies like the piled raft platform to ensure the best possible results for this type of scenario.”
