Structural cladding elements and simple transfer slab support glass box penthouses

The London Legacy Development Corporation approved the new 31-storey residential building comprising 181 dwellings during 2013. Walsh worked with Telford Homes to assist with the planning application and delivery.

The site is located in central Stratford adjacent to the railway station and footbridge into the Westfield complex.

The tower is slender at only 26m x 20m in plan and the site is only a litter bigger than the tower. As such, site logistics, craneage and Network Rail were all significant constraints to the building.

The design of the tower is in four sections. There are three stacked boxes of precast cladding with an inset layer between each above these is a four-storey glazed structure for the penthouses.

Due to the building height and storey depths Walsh worked closely with the team to mitigate all transfer around these three inset levels by use of structural cladding elements and only required a transfer slab to support the glass box on top.
