Embassy Gardens is a prestigious multiple-phase mixed-use development in Nine Elms, South West London. It will fill eight plots around the new American Embassy site providing around 2000 residential units and 500,000 square feet of commercial space. There is also an extravagant Sky Pool placed between two of the structures. Our engineering teams were uniquely placed to design the development’s innovative concrete and steel solutions. We also advised on ground remediations for this former gasworks site. This included heavy contamination and scour features in the northern half of the site. Through working with each of the design teams, we were able to avoid basements, while giving careful consideration to foundation construction. We developed a standard frame system across the residential sites using long span PT flat slab construction. This allowed flexibility for apartment layouts and resulted in a regular open column grid in the low level commercial spaces. In bringing the concept of the Sky Pool to life, we designed bridging blocks as steel and concrete hybrid structures using vierendeel trusses. Further collaboration with post designers ensured that the pool support points could resist differential horizontal and vertical building movements. We’re confident Embassy Gardens will become a major destination for London residents and visitors alike.
