Walsh played a key role in turning the former Hartley’s Jam Factory into a vibrant fully functioning destination. The results included 200 flats and 4,000 square metres of live and work units. Part refurbishment, part new build, this project was an interesting blend of the past and present. The result transformed a collection of iconic Edwardian buildings into a centre for living and working. Our aim throughout was maintaining the existing building and then extending upwards. After detailed historical and structural investigation, our professionals were able to establish that, despite some wear and tear, the original structure, foundations and cast iron columns were in good condition. They could accommodate up to three more storeys. To complete the job with a high-end finish, we also repaired and strengthened masonry piers and filler joist floors.
