The Stage, in Shoreditch, is a new 250,000 square foot project which includes residential, office, leisure and retail spaces. It will become a new creative hub in one of London’s most vibrant and dynamic communities. The historical site comes with multiple constraints due to its archaeological importance centring on The Curtain Theatre. The Curtain hosted William Shakespeare, and his acting troupe, during his lifetime. The new Stage plans include a heritage centre on site, housing the remains of the theatre and an interactive exhibit. Visitors will be able to stand where Shakespeare did almost 500 years ago. As well as this valuable contribution, this unique inner city project will provide 412 high-tech luxury apartments overlooking one of the largest new public piazzas in the capital. Walsh has been involved, working closely with the client and architect, to develop a double basement strategy with a complex construction sequence. The result is a coverable new development close to Liverpool Street station that, alongside the new housing, hosts shops, a performing arts pavilion and sunken amphitheatre, a luxury gym, terrace, bar and bowling alley in the tower block.
