Wind Tunnel Testing in Action

Last week our team had the opportunity to visit RWDI’s wind tunnel lab in Milton Keynes. They were also accompanied by our clients and partners at TP Bennett and Berkeley St Edwards.

The day involved a fascinating tour around the workshop & wind tunnel testing facility, plus a CPD seminar on the testing methods and analysis, which was really enlightening.

Walsh has seen first-hand the benefits of RWDI’s wind tunnel testing, in fact in a recent project with Berkeley working on the Paddington Green Police Station redevelopment, it allowed us to refine the stability design of the tallest building. The results from the wind tunnel were able to justify the reduction of loading from Eurocode, which reduced the stiffness required to satisfy comfort and ULS requirements. Walsh was then able to lower the core in the overall concrete volume by 35%, and embodied carbon was reduced by 25%.

Below are a couple of videos of wind tunnel testing in action.

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Sustainability is in our DNA and we have our own ambitious goals to achieve Net Zero as a business and with our designs. With innovative in-house monitoring tools, Walsh clients have seen on average reductions of 10-20% total embodied carbon, with some of our flagship work achieving 60-70% reductions compared with baseline figures.
