This is the first Mayfield Villages brand development and is one of the largest retirement villages in the UK. The size of the development makes the project very similar in nature to the residential developments Walsh have a proven track record of successfully delivering.
Walsh were employed to take the design fromm planning to completion. Walsh were able to bring significant savings to the scheme in terms of both cost and embodied carbon through lean design and consideration of sustainability in the specifications.
In total a saving of 290m3 of concrete and 140 tonnes of reinforcing steel were able to be stripped from the planning scheme. This reduction in building weight combined with an optimisation exercise on the foundation design led to a 25% reduction in overall number of piles required for the project.
The Block B building includes two levels of car parking below the apartment levels. By using post-tensioned slab techniques, the typical floors were able to be reduced from 275mm thick to 225mm while still maintaining spans between columns to avoid the necessity for a transfer slab or beams above the car park.
